Home School Math Today

1. Natalie bought purple, green, and gold streamers to put all the way around the librarian's desk on Mardi Gras Day. The desk is in the shape of a triangle with sides of 5m, 3m, and 6m. The streamers cost $0.43 per meter. What will it cost to buy enough to wrap around the desk 5 times?

2. At the end of the parade Mr. and Mrs. Williams bought pizza for all the members of the kazoo band. Each pizza was cut into seven pieces. If each of the twenty-four members of the band eats three slices, how many whole pizzas will Mr. and Mrs. Williams need to buy?

3. Brian made some very strange pancakes. He put blue food coloring in the batter and made blue pancakes shaped like pentagons. The sides of the pancakes were 6.6 cm each. What is the perimeter of one pancake?

4. The East Elementary School kazoo band has seventy-eight members. One-sixth of them play tambourines and one-sixth of them play cowbells. The rest of the members of the band play kazoos. How many of the band students play kazoos?

5. Brian built a scale model of the log cabin Abraham Lincoln lived in when he was a child. The model is a rectangle with a length of 35 inches and a width of 24 inches. What is the perimeter of the model?

6. Hailey had the highest batting average on her team. She won a trophy and a white t-shirt with the team mascot and her name on it. Her batting average was 0.321. Write her batting average as a fraction.

7. Olivia made chocolate chip pancakes for International Pancake Day. She used an octagonal grill with 11-inch sides. What is the perimeter of Olivia's grill?

8. Thomas spent eight dollars and fifteen cents on a Mancala game. He also bought a Monopoly® game for nine dollars and seventy-seven cents. How much did he spend in all? Write your answer as a decimal.

9. Each student is decorating a white t-shirt for White T-Shirt Day. Timothy drew a circle with a diameter of 10 cm on his shirt. He drew a picture of a wolf in it. What is the circumference of the circle he drew?

10. Mrs. Martinez is planning a barbecue for Mardi Gras Day. She will serve tea or coffee, barbecued chicken or ribs, and cole slaw or potato salad. How many choices of a beverage, a meat, and a salad does she have for her party?

  1. 1. $30.10 after you add, and then multiply to
    times.

  2. Outstanding! P= total of the sides of a triangle
If this would have been an equilateral triangle you could have multiplied one side by 3 and solved for the perimeter.

  3. 2. 11 with some slices left over.

  4. First you had to determine how many total slices of pizza the band members would eat. 72 Then you divided 7 slices per pizza into 72 and you come up with 10.285 and then rounding it off and since your problem does not allow you to buy pizza slices but rather whole pizza you would need to buy 11 pizzas. YOu would have a few slices left over.

  5. 3. .33m is the corect answer.

  6. Good, Again you have to remember what a pentagon is. It is a five sided figure. Actually, the US Military Headquarters in Washington, D. C. is in the shape of a pentagon and that is why they call it the Pentagon. This building was hit on 9/11/2001.

  7. 4. 58 Members play kazoos. 13 play tamborines and cowbells.

  8. Solve for how many play something other than kuzzos 2/6 play tamborines and cowbells. 4/6 play kuzzos. So 78 X 4/6 = 52 13 play tamborines or 1/6 and 13 play cowbells or 1/6

  9. 4. Sorry I mean 52 members!

  10. 5. 118 inches in the perimeter.

  11. to solve for a rectangle's perimeter. P=L X 2 + W X 2 and really is the total of all sides around the outside of the rectangle.
    118 inches in this case.

  12. 6. 321/1000, because the 0 in front of the #
    has no purpose

  13. batting average in a fraction would be simply reading where the decimal point is and since this one has three numbers to the right; it would be 1000ths.

  14. 7. 88, after you multiply 8x11.

  15. Excellent! You know that an Octagon is 8 sided so you multiply the one side by 8 and you solve for the perimeter. Good Job Have a GREAT DAY!

  16. Remember that C=pi X d or C= 2r x pi
So, 10 cm is diameter therefore pi=3.14 x 10 cm= 31.4 cm for the circumference.
In our next example where d = 5 then the circumference is 15.7 if you use the formula C=pi x d Also, remember that r or the radius is 1/2 the diameter in any circle.

  17. 9. 31.4 , after you drop the zero.

  18. 15.7 is correct in the problem I suggested over the phone. It is important that you memorize these formulas for finding circumference in circles and perimeters in polygons.

  20. Brian built a scale model of the log cabin Abraham Lincoln lived in when he was a child. The model is a rectangle with a length of 35 inches and a width of 24 inches. What is the area in inches of this structure?

    ReplyDelete
  21. A=LXW and we now identify it as Square inches in the answer. Also, remember that if we had a height of 10 inches in this structure we could solve for volume
V=LXWXH and this would be identified as cubic inches because we would have a cube

  22. Mackenzie bought a mansion with a very small bathroom, it had a width of 10 inches a length
of 10, and a hidth of 14 inches. What is the area?

    ReplyDelete
  23. 100 sq inches A=lxw and the volume would be 1400 cubic inches because V=lxwxh
