Valentine's Day Eve Math for Homeschool
Valentine's Day Math Stories
Complete and show your work.
1. The EdHelper Candy Company donated two thousand, eight hundred ninety chocolate-nut bars to Marco Polo Elementary School for their Valentine's Day celebration. There are eight hundred three students in the school. Two of the students are allergic to chocolate and seven students can't eat nuts. On the day of the party, twelve other students were absent. If the candy was divided evenly among the remaining students, how many bars did each student get?
2. Dad decided to take Mom out to dinner for Valentine's Day. They had a good time talking during dinner. On the way home, Dad had to stop for gas. He put sixteen gallons of gas into our mini van. The gas price is $1.58 per gallon. How much money did Dad spend on gas?
3. At school, twelve percent of the students wore red shirts on Valentine's Day. There are nineteen classes in the school with eighteen students in each class. How many students wore red shirts on Valentine's Day?
4. Noah is going to bring ice cream to the Valentine's Day party. If two pints of ice cream can feed seven people, how many pints of ice cream does he need to buy for 28 people?
5. There are thirty-two students in Mr. Jernigan's class. One-fourth of them don't want to have a Valentine's Day party. How many students do want to have a party?
6. Madison is making brownies for the class party. The recipe makes 12 brownies and uses 2.5 cups of flour. Madison wants to make 27 brownies, so how much flour will she need?

5. Mr. White works at the Levi Strauss factory. He packs boxes of jackets into larger cartons. Each carton is 6 feet x 4.8 feet x 3 feet. The boxes are 3 feet x 1.2 feet x 1 foot. How many boxes will fit in each carton?
6. Robert picked up all the pennies he saw on the ground on his way to school. At the end of 46 days he had picked up 133 pennies. What is the average number of pennies he picked up each day? Round off your answer to the nearest whole penny.
7. Kyle is painting a rectangular box in red, white, and blue to make a base for a President's Day display. The box is 4 ft x 3 ft x 2 ft. Each can of paint covers 15 ft2. He uses equal amounts of each color. How many cans of red paint will he need?
8. Joshua's mother works at an umbrella factory. She cuts out the circles of waterproof fabric that are made into umbrellas. Each piece of fabric must have a diameter of 22 inches. What is the distance around (circumference) each circle of fabric? (C = Pi x d)
9. Austin has 20 spacecraft models including his favorite, John Glenn's Mercury capsule. Each model is in a clear plastic box that measures 1.3 feet x 0.6 feet x 0.6 feet. He has to pack all his models in a carton to get ready for his family's move. What is the volume of the smallest carton he can use for all 20 models? Round your answer to the nearest whole number.
10. Sierra started working on a crazy quilt on Quiet Day. Each piece is a different shape. She even used a shape with 8 sides! The lengths of the sides are 1 inch, 3/4 inches, 1 1/4 inches, 1/4 inches, 1 1/2 inches, 1 1/2 inches, 1 1/2 inches, and 1 3/4 inches. What is the perimeter of the shape?

"Little Girl Turned into a Frog"

"Little Girl Turned Into A Frog"
by Chantelle Auree-Petrone
Once I was small and a little child
Played outside when it was mild.
Even played outside in the sun shine
And I was happy most of the time
But when the sky turned grey and cloudy
I felt the urge and need to be rowdy
Had to stay inside my mom would say
For it’s really blustery outside today
The clouds would swell and fill with rain
And me staying inside seemed insane
Stuck my nose up to the window pane
Watched the frogs hopping on the lane
Then the thunder would boom
The lightning would zoom
The cloud faces would make a frown
The rain would come pouring down
As tears would flow from my eyes
I could hear mom’s breath of heavy sighs
Mom would say, well I suppose
Quick as a wink I ‘d grab my clothes
I would put on my coat and green booties
Shake off all those indoor cooties
Grab my favorite umbrella from the rack
Kiss my mother goodbye with a smack
Ran outside under the rainy shower
God had sent from his heavenly tower
Skipped and splashed in water puddles
Surrounded by lots of rainbow cuddles
I started out as a child in the fog
Magical rain turned me into a frog
From a child to a frog as the lightning flashed
Mom caught it on film just as I splashed
Now there is proof that it happened to me
The day I played in rain and you can see
Once I was a child now turned into a frog
